Serhii Pun: SBU reform improves response system to new challenges

The SBU reform will provide modern methods to respond to new challenges. This was announced by Deputy Head of the SBU reform Serhii Pun on a TV channel.

“We live in the 21st century. We face the new challenges and threats that require effective response. In fact, this law will provide the SBU with it,” Serhii Pun said.

According to him, the most pressing threats for Ukraine are Russian hybrid and military warfare, corruption, cyber crime aimed at critical infrastructure, and terrorism. Respectively, the SBU must be provided with human and technical resources in order not to respond to post-factum threats, but to prevent them.

He also drew attention to such an important aspect of the reform as staff management.

“Staff is our main resource, we must not only preserve it, but also create the necessary preconditions to attract qualified specialists, for example, in cybersecurity sphere," pointed out Serhii Pun. At the same time, the optimization of the staff will primarily affect units that do not carry out operational-search and counter-intelligence activities.

Serhii Pun stressed that Ukraine currently has all the prerequisites for the reform, including political will.

We recall that the draft law “On the Security Service of Ukraine” was submitted by the President of Ukraine to the Parliament on March 10. It contains system innovations that will allow the SBU to change and improve its activity.

In May, the Verkhovna Rada considered the draft law and sent it for a second reading. Currently, work on the text of the draft law is ongoing on the basis of the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada with the involvement of the international experts and the public sector.
