The leadership automatically renews contracts that have expired before the start of the war. And when soldiers protest and refuse to fight, they are threatened with arrest for desertion.

‘You will return home either as ‘cargo 200’ [killed, in military jargon] or as ‘300’ [wounded], or sentenced to seven to twelve [years in prison],’ Russian contractor quotes his commander.

In early February, he managed to submit his letter of resignation. And yet he was sent ‘to the drills’, which they promised would be completed by the 20th of February.

Instead, it is end of March, and the soldier is at war. So, he asks his wife: ‘Call the commandant’s office in Moscow and clarify: the contract is extended in case of war, but this is not a war - this is a special operation.
