SSU shuts down three new draft evasion schemes: ex-adviser to Yanukovych’s chief of staff among organizers
The SSU has blocked another three mobilization evasion schemes. Organizers were detained in several regions of Ukraine.
Among them are a former adviser to the head of Yanukovych’s administration and an official of a military medical commission, who ‘made’ up to USD 10,000 on each evader.
For the money, they facilitated the departure of potential conscripts abroad, bypassing checkpoints or using counterfeit documents.
In Kyiv:
The SSU neutralized a criminal group that smuggled draft dodgers to the EU as ‘international passenger transport drivers’.
The group was headed by a Kyiv resident, who from 2012 to early 2014 served as an adviser to the head of the fugitive president’s administration.
To operate the scheme, the former official registered his ‘clients’ with a controlled carrier company and entered them in the Shliakh system as drivers on cross-border trips.
In Zakarpattia region:
The law enforcement exposed an official of a local military medical commission who was selling fake medical reports on unfitness for service to draft evaders.
His ‘clients’ planned to leave Ukraine as ‘de-registered’.
The official was detained after he received a bribe.
In Ternopil region:
The SSU Military Counterintelligence shut down another illegal migration channel. A volunteer of a local charity fund and a resident of the oblast were involved in organizing it.
For money, they brought draft evaders to the border with a European country and showed them forest paths to cross away from checkpoints.
The SSU detained both suspects.
In all the uncovered cases, the detained persons have been served notices of suspicion. Two suspects are in custody. Investigations are ongoing. The organizers and their accomplices face up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The decision to qualify the evaders’ criminal actions is pending.
The operations were conducted by the SSU together with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor’s Office.
