SBU prevents smuggling of automatic weapon parts to Ukraine
The SBU blocked illicit channel of firearm components trafficking to Ukraine. The smuggler used the obtained parts to bring into combat readiness submachine guns of a foreign type for criminals.
During the search, SBU officers seized two SA-24 and SA-26 submachine guns, four F-1 grenade bodies, unified bomb detonators, over 600 rounds of various calibers, gunpowder for ammunition manufacturing, devices and equipment for repairing and refurbishing the firearms.
Afterwards, the seized weapons were sent for examination.
Allegedly, the illegal activity was organized by a resident of Kyiv. The perpetrator organized the smuggling of components for automatic weapons from one of the European countries. He received smuggled goods from his foreign accomplices via international postal services.
The perpetrator used submunitions to repair and refurbish small arms for representatives of criminal circles for further sale. He equipped the underground workshop in his garage.
Law enforcement officers detained the organizer of the scheme on receiving a parcel with components at one of the post offices in the city of Kyiv. During searches of the shipment, SBU investigators found ten shotgun ribs and 15 magazines for Scorpion small smart weapon.
The criminal proceedings were initiated upon the fact of smuggling. The issue of serving the detainee a suspicion notice and choosing a type of detention is being resolved.
Investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the case and bring to justice other persons involved in smuggling.
The operation was conducted by the SBU Office in Zakarpattia region under the supervision of the Zakarpattia Region Prosecutor's Office.
