In Lviv region, the SBU prevented the ecological damage of resort city Truskavets by a commercial entity.

The SBU officers established that due to businessmen’ inaction more than 20 engineering structures of the Truskavets mineral water basin were in critical condition. The offenders also deliberately violated the order of use and protection of natural resources. It led to the pollution of deposits and created an environmental hazard in the region. A number of Naftusia-type healing wells are closed.

According to experts, such activities could deprive Truskavets city of world famous health resort status.

The information on involvement of the Truskavets City Council officials and other state structures in the illegal activities is being checked. Allegedly, the officials entered deliberately false information in reports on the use of natural resources. They intentionally underestimated the volume of special water use, which could annually damage the local budget for UAH 500,000 (USD 17,600).

Law enforcement officers seized documents from the Truskavets City Council, the Lviv Geological Exploration Expedition, the Basin Water Resources Department and the State Water Resources Agency. Preliminary analysis shows that the ultimate owner of the commercial entities that used the wells is a deputy of a political party. The seized documentation will be added to the case files.

The investigation is ongoing upon the fact of violation of rules related to water protection and abuse of authority or office.

The operation was conducted jointly with the Main National Police Directorate under the procedural supervision of the Lviv Region Prosecutor's Office.
