SBU enhances cyber security cooperation with ministries

The Security Service of Ukraine together with representatives of all ministries, the Staff of the National Security and Defense Council and the State Service of Special Communication continue to consistently work on preventing cyber threats to Ukraine's national security. The first post-review meeting of the working group took place on July, 6th. To remind, the working group was established under the aegis of the SBU in late 2020. The aim of the meeting was to review the achieved results in strengthening the level of cyber security of government information systems, as well as to discuss further joint steps in this field.

"Within this period, the SBU Situation Center for Cyber Security in cooperation with state authorities diverted dozens of large-scale cyber attacks at government information systems by Russian special services. The attacks targeted at electronic document flow systems of governmental bodies,” said Volodymyr Horbenko, the SBU Deputy Head.

Oleksiy Korniychuk, the head of the SBU Cyber Security Department highlighted a number of problematic issues in the field of cyber security. "Among the problematic issues are inefficient staffing, and the imperfection of the legal system regulating the cooperation of cyber security actors, as well as the lack of initiative in the implementation of cyber security measures by some ministries," - emphasized Oleksiy Korniychuk.

The participants of the meeting noted that the SBU specialists blocked 201 cyber attacks targeted at Ukrainian ministries and agencies, as well as gained a unique experience of joint response to cyber threats. Most of the governmental bodies have already joined the MISP-UA information platform, which allows cyber specialists to exchange data on cyber attacks and cyber incidents more efficiently.

The working group agreed on further implementing and scaling the cyber security measures in state-owned enterprises, institutions and organizations.
