SSU identifies russian generals commanding air strikes on high-rise buildings during battle for Kyiv
The SSU has collected evidence against another two russian officials involved in mass killings of civilians during the battle for Kyiv.
As a result of the investigation, the SSU documented the war crimes of:
- colonel-general Alexander Chaiko, commander of the Eastern military district of the russian armed forces;
- lieutenant-general Vladimir Kravchenko, commander of the 11th
army of the air force and air defence of the russian armed forces.
During russia’s full-scale invasion, these generals commanded the bombing of residential areas in Borodyanka village, Kyiv region.
According to the investigation, in early March 2022 Chaiko gave a direct order to fire on apartment buildings in the centre of the village.
To carry out the order, Kravchenko used SU-34 fighter-bombers and SU-25 attack aircraft from russia’s 303rd mixed aviation division.
During the sorties, enemy aircraft launched 500 kg high explosive bombs at residential buildings housing civilians at the time in Borodyanka.
As a result of the attack, the aggressor destroyed six apartment buildings, killing more than 30 local residents, including a young girl.
Some of the victims have not yet been identified and are considered missing.
Over 200 examinations were conducted in the course of the investigation. Based on the evidence collected, the SSU notified the two russian generals of suspicion under Articles 28.2, 438.2 of the CCU (violation of laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder, committed by a group).
Efforts are underway to bring the war criminals to justice.
The investigation was carried out by the SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
