SBU announces suspicion of organizing TV channel shelling to Semen Semenchenko

The SBU solved a terrorist attack, in particular July 2019 shelling of the 112 TV Channel building.

The pre-trial investigation established that Semen Semenchenko organized the said shelling. The offence was committed during a parliamentary elections campaign. The terrorist attack was used by representatives of the aggressor state in the hybrid war against Ukraine. Two members of the offender’s subordinate armed group were also involved.

In June 2019, Semenchenko, jointly with an accomplice, conducted reconnaissance near the TV channel building. They were choosing the best way to commit the attack, including withdrawal routes from the crime scene and testing CCTV cameras.

In addition, Semen Semenchenko organized funding for purchase of vehicles and other means necessary to commit the crime.

According to an initial organizer’s plan, the perpetrators had to purchase a car and plant it with explosives. Then the car parked near the building of the TV channel had to be exploded at the appointed time.

However, in order to conceal the perpetrators and organizer, it was decided to commit a terrorist act by shelling the building with an anti-tank grenade launcher.

During the searches of offenders’ residences in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv region, law enforcement officers found and seized vehicles and means used to commit the crime.

The offenders received suspicion notices for the terrorist attack. The type of detention is to be chosen.

The operation was conducted by the SBU under the supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
