Zakarpattia region: SSU exposes illegal extraction of natural resources
In Zakarpattia region, the SSU continues to expose a large scale embezzlement of natural resources in the bed of Tysa River and its tributaries.
SSU exposed another head of water management department who assisted illegal extraction of sand and gravel mix under the guise of cleaning and management of riverbeds.
Experts estimated the state losses of over UAH 56 m. (USD 2,1 m.).
Allegedly, the official who was responsible for preservation of local ecosystem ignored its destruction and provided the local businessman an access to conduct illegal activity without official permission.
The head of inter-district water management department received a suspicion notice of neglect of the official duty.
According to the SSU materials, five companies’ directors were served suspicion notices of violation of rules related to the protection of mineral resources. Experts estimated the state losses of over UAH 76 m. (USD 2,8 m.).
Investigative actions are underway to bring to justice other persons involved in the illegal activities.

The state losses of illegal scheme are estimated of over UAH 250 m. (USD 9,3 m.) for two years.
It is documented that illegal mining led to the complete destruction of the soil cover and flora, which will take decades to restore.
The operation was carried out jointly with the investigators of the Main National Police Department in Zakarpattia region, as well as the State Ecological Inspection of Ukraine under the supervision of the Zakarpattia Region Prosecutor`s Office.
