SBU terminates powers of two foreign diplomats in Ukraine

In the first quarter of 2021, SBU CI terminated ahead of schedule the powers of two foreign diplomats who worked in Ukraine. They violated the requirements of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Also, since the beginning of 2021, SBU CI exposed over 70 cases of treason, espionage and participation in terrorist groups and organizations. The SBU prevented violations of state export control for more than USD 3.78 m.
Total sum of imposed fines is UAH 632.6 m. (USD 22.6 m.).

According to SBU CI investigations, courts made 30 sentences that have come into force.

SBU CI exposed and terminated the activities of the FSB agent network comprised of former intelligence officers. It was operating in Kyiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions.

Russian agents were preparing sabotage, gathering information about the deployment and relocation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and intending to abduct one of the former commanders of the Special Operations Forces.

The SBU blocked the activity of current and former officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who illegally exported excisable goods to the EU countries. The officials, using diplomatic privileges and immunities, smuggled currency, gold, and tobacco across the state border.

In Chernihiv region, SBU CI officers exposed a group of former and current officials of the regional department of the State Migration Service, judicial bodies and registration authorities, representatives of the State Border Guard Service and translation bureaus involved in the illegal legalization of foreigners. The officials organized registration of fictitious marriages of foreigners with Ukrainian citizen, and acknowledgement of paternity.

In Zakarpattia region, SBU CI blocked illicit trafficking of Russian citizens to the EU, Great Britain and the United States. Hungarian consulate staff in several EU countries helped to illegally obtain Hungarian citizenship.

The SBU exposed misappropriation of military property by officials of one of the units of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense at the request of businessmen. The offenders intended to sale it to state-owned defense enterprises, as well as abroad.

In total, in the first quarter of 2021, SBU investigators initiated 815 criminal proceedings; 280 indictments have already been filed to court.
