SSU stops operation of clandestine service used by russians to call Ukrainians anonymously
The SSU’s cyber units have exposed ‘businessmen’ who re-routed international calls to Ukraine. Their services allowed anyone from abroad to call users in Ukraine anonymously.
This channel was also used by russians, which posed an additional threat to Ukraine’s national security.
The SSU identified four organizers of the illegal business. They have been served notices of suspicion, and the ‘telephone service’ has been shut down.
According to the investigation, the offenders used PROXY-servers, the latest IP telephony technologies and specialized software.
This allowed them to bypass the switching centres of domestic operators and made all calls that went through the ‘service’ invisible to Ukrainian law enforcement agencies.
According to the available data, the illegal business brought the group up to USD 50,000 per week.
To ‘cover their tracks’, the organizers used front persons from socially vulnerable groups.
However, the SSU exposed and stopped the unlawful activity.
Based on the collected evidence, the four persons involved have been served notices of suspicion under Articles 28.3 and 361.5 of the CCU (unauthorized interference in operation of information and communication systems, electronic communication networks). The suspects are facing up to 15 years in prison.
The SSU exposed the offence jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
