SBU systematically exposes corruption in education sector
The Security Service of Ukraine documented numerous facts of administrative offenses related to corruption by the rector of Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University in the city of Mykolaiv.
The SBU established that during 2019-2020 the rector set up a corrupt mechanism for rewarding his own relatives, whom he employed at the university. In particular, it is documented that the rector's relatives illegally received awards of several hundred thousand hryvnas. The exact sum of rewards is being established.
Based on the above facts, dozens of reports on administrative offenses were drawn up. The Central District Court of Mykolaiv reviewed the materials and ruled that the rector of Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University was guilty of committing an administrative offense related to corruption. The official was brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The operation was carried out jointly with the Department of Strategic Investigations of the National Police of Ukraine in Mykolaiv region.
As part of systematic work to expose and stop corruption of high-ranking officials in education sector, the Security Service of Ukraine documented a number of abuses by the leadership of Ukrainian higher education institutions. In particular, the law enforcement recorded offenses committed by officials of universities that train engineers and pilots of civil aviation in the cities of Kyiv and Kropyvnytskyi. An official of a scientific institution of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in the field of biotechnology is also suspected of corruption.
The SBU established that during 2019-2020 the employees of the above scientific and educational institutions illegally rewarded themselves, their acquaintances and relatives employed by them in subordinate institutions. The illegal bonuses amounted to hundreds of thousands of hryvnas.
The documented materials were sent to the National Police to bring the officials to justice in accordance with the law.
