SSU and NABU expose judge in Kropyvnytskyi who demanded bribe from defendant to ‘save’ him from jail for fatal road accident

The SSU and the NABU are systemically fighting against corruption in the judiciary. This time, the partners have exposed a judge of Kropyvnytskyi Court of Appeal on asking money from a suspect in a case.

The official wanted to receive USD 10,500 from a defendant in a proceeding on a road accident that caused a person’s death.

For this money, the judge promised the accused a non-custodial sentence.

He involved an acquaintance, a former officer of the disbanded militsiya, as an intermediary to discuss the terms and the handover of the bribe.

The law enforcement agencies documented the handover of the entire amount to the accomplice.

Based on the collected evidence, the judge was served a notice of suspicion under Article 368.3 of the CCU (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official).

The actions of the intermediary fall under Articles 27.5 and 368.3 of the CCU (aiding the acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official). Court is to decide on a measure of restraint for him.

The investigation is underway. The suspects are facing up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office.
