The SSU and the National Police have apprehended two agents of russian intelligence services who carried out a terrorist attack in Berdychiv, Zhytomyr oblast, on 24 December this year.
The perpetrator of the crime, who detonated an improvised explosive device near a local Territorial Recruitment Center, was detained within 2 hours after the crime. His accomplice, who had manufactured the explosives following instructions from a russian handler, was caught a few hours after the bomber.
According to the investigation, the person who carried out the attack is a 41-year-old man, IDP from Mariupol, who had previously served a sentence for robbery, theft and drug offences. The IED was made by a 23-year-old drug addict from Berdychiv, who came to the enemy’s attention as she was looking for money for a dose on Telegram channels.
According to the handler’s instructions, she made an explosive device and disguised in a food container and stuffed with metal balls from bearings to enhance the damaging effect.
The girl handed over the finished device to the man, who came to Berdychiv to carry out the task.
After the meeting, the bomber hid the explosive in a plastic bag and left it under the door of the Territorial Recruitment Center.
Having moved to a safe distance from the IED, the terrorist remotely detonated it using a mobile phone and a homemade electric detonator attached to the device.
To report to his handler, the man had previously installed a mobile phone hidden in a box in front of the TRC building, which broadcast the explosion in real time.
Coincidentally, no one was injured in the incident.
The law enforcement detained the repeat offender when he was returning to Kyiv by bus, planning to lay low. His accomplice was detained at her cohabitant’s home in Berdychiv.
During the searches, mobile phones and SIM cards with evidence of the crime were seized from the detained individuals.
SSU investigators have served them notices of suspicion under the Article 258.2 of the CCU (terrorist act, committed by prior conspiracy).
The suspects are in custody and face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
