SSU and National Police detain enemy accomplices who carried out arsons and spied in Zaporizhzhia and Volyn regions

The Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police have apprehended another two enemy agents who, on the orders of russian intelligence services, spied on the Defence Forces and committed arson attacks in southern and western Ukraine.

A perpetrator detained in Zaporizhzhia is a 31-year-old drug addict who had previously spent 6 years in prison for theft. After the release, he was remotely recruited by the occupiers.

On their instructions, he set fire to a vehicle of the AFU that was undergoing maintenance after combat missions at the front.

The asset also monitored the presence of personnel at the locations of the Defence Forces. The russians were trying to collect this information for new air strikes on the city.

The law enforcement detained the agent on an attempt to burn another car. Simultaneously, actions were taken to protect the locations of the Defence Forces.

In Volyn oblast, an 18-year-old local resident was detained for burning a relay cabinet on a railway line near Lutsk.

The man received this task from a russian intelligence officer. The latter remotely recruited him through russian Telegram channels, where users look for ways to make ‘easy’ money.

Both detained individuals were notified of suspicion (in accordance with the crimes committed) under the Articles of the CCU:

  • 113.2 (sabotage, committed under martial law);
  • 28.2, 114-1.1 (obstruction of lawful activities of the AFU, upon prior conspiracy, by a group);
  • 28.2, 194.2 (intentional damage to property committed by arson, upon prior conspiracy, by a group).

The suspects are in custody and face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operations were carried out by the SSU Office in Zaporizhzhia and Volyn regions jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the regional prosecutor’s offices.
