SSU, Prosecutor’s Office and Polish law enforcement detain enemy agent who offered russian intelligence to assassinate President of Ukraine

The SSU, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine and Poland’s law enforcement agencies have detained a Polish citizen who cooperated with russia’s military intelligence (‘the GRU’).

According to the investigation, the perpetrator’s plan was to collect information on the security of Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport and pass it to russians. Among other things, this was to help russian intelligence services plan an assassination of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi during his stay in Poland.

The SSU and Ukrainian prosecutors informed Polish counterparts about a possible assassination attempt and handed over key evidence in the case. This was carried out within the international legal assistance procedure.

Thanks to the successful actions and prompt information sharing between the countries, the agent of russian intelligence was detained in Poland.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Poland charged him with readiness to act in favour of a foreign intelligence service (Article 130 § 3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Poland).

On 18 April 2024, at the request of the Polish Prosecutor’s Office, the District Court in Warsaw imposed custody as a measure of restraint on the suspect.

The investigation is carried out by the Internal Security Agency of Poland under the supervision of the National Prosecutor’s Office.

The SSU is grateful to its partners for effective cooperation in countering russia’s crimes in Ukraine and abroad.
