SSU exposes GRU’s agents who provided enemy with intelligence on positions of Defence Forces near Bakhmut
As a result of a special operation in Donetsk region, the SSU Counterintelligence exposed agents of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (better known as the GRU).
The enemy agents are two residents of Kramatorsk. One of them is a nurse of the Territorial Defence combat unit of the AFU.
On the aggressor’s instructions, they collected intelligence on locations and movements of the Defence Forces near Bakhmut.
The enemy was primarily interested in routes of movement of Ukrainian heavy armored vehicles towards the eastern front.
The occupiers needed the information to plan combat operations in Bakhmut area.
The agents also recorded the results of enemy strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure to adjust repeated attacks.
The SSU Counterintelligence detained both informants when they were performing a reconnaissance assignment.
According to the investigation, the spies were in contact with a serving officer of the GRU.
The investigation established that he had recruited the agents through a serviceman of a reconnaissance unit of the 1st army corps of russia’s Southern military district, in which the son of one of the agents is serving.
The aggressor promised the informants ‘senior positions’ in the local occupation administration, if the region is captured.
During the searches at the suspects’ residences, the SSU found mobile phones and a laptop, which they used to communicate with the russian handler.
Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators served one of the detained agents a notice of suspicion under the Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law), and the other - under the Article 114-2.2 (dissemination of information on movement, transfer or location of the AFU).
The court chose custody a measure of restraint for the suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
The SSU carried out the operation under the supervision of Rivne Region Prosecutor’s Office.
