SBU exposes city council candidate on election rigging

In Sumy region, SBU prevented a city council candidate from trying to falsify local election results for his own benefit.

Allegedly, the candidate tried to force the system administrator of the municipal territorial and election committee to enter false data into the electronic register of election results in favor of his political power. According to exit polls, the political party failed to overcome the 5% barrier and had no chance to get into the city council.

The candidate offered the system administrator an illegal benefit for entering false data into the e-cabinet of the municipal election committee. For money, the committee's staff was to unlawfully increase the number of votes for the political power per 140 voters. The cost of the "service" was planned to be determined after the electoral fraud.

As a result, the SBU operatives prevented the interference into the electoral system.

During the searches of the suspect’s residence, law enforcement officers seized evidence of unlawful activities, in particular “correspondence” with an official of the territorial election commission about the details and conditions of the fraud.

The candidate was served a suspicion notice of giving an offer, promise or bribe to an official and unauthorized actions with information, which is processed in the electronic computing machines (computers), automated systems, computer networks or saved on the information-carrying medium, committed by a person entitled to access to such information.

Investigative actions are ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the case.

The operation was carried out jointly with the Main Department of the National Police in Sumy region under the supervision of the Sumy Region Prosecutor's Office.
