SSU exposes leadership of Central Military Medical Commission on bribes from draft evaders

The SSU jointly with the SBI exposed the deputy head of the Central Military Medical Commission of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on systemic corruption.

The official set up a criminal mechanism to receive money from citizens of call-up age.

For various amounts of bribes, he ‘offered’ men to evade military service under martial law.

In the course of the investigation, the SSU documented the suspect extort USD 5,000 from a conscript.

For this money, the official promised to assist in issuing the man a medical commission’s conclusion on his unfitness for military service for health reasons with further deregistration at the military enlistment office.

The law enforcement documented the hand-over of the first part of the bribe (USD 2,500).

The SSU exposed the deputy head at his office when he received the rest of the sum.

During searches at the suspect’s workplace and house in the capital, investigators found large amounts of cash in different currencies. The total of seized money is equivalent to over UAH 5 mln (USD 124,000).

Criminal proceeding was opened under the Article 368.3 of the CCU (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official). The official has been notified of suspicion. Court is to decide on custody as a measure of restraint.

The suspect is facing up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Kyiv and Kyiv region exposed the offence jointly with the State Bureau of Investigations under the procedural supervision of Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
