SBU exposes officials extorting bribes for burial plots (video)

The SBU exposed large-scale illegal schemes in "Spetskombinat PKPO", municipal enterprise providing funeral services. The suspects demanded bribes for the allocation of burial plots in Kyiv cemeteries.

The bribes ranged from USD 3.000 to 6.000 per plot.

Allegedly, several officials of the municipal enterprise set up an illegal mechanism for receiving money from citizens for the provision of funeral services. For various amounts of money, the suspects guaranteed assistance in allocating burial plots.

The organizers involved two accomplices, who introduced themselves as employees of Kyiv cemeteries, and demanded money for their services.

The SBU documented the episodes of the suspects’ receiving USD 3.000 and USD 5.000 for allocating two burial plots in the Lisove Cemetery.

The law enforcement detained one of the accomplices while receiving USD 6.000 for allocating another burial plot.

Currently, the detainee was served a notice of suspicion of taking a bribe.

The investigation is ongoing to bring to justice the organizers and other persons involved in the illegal activities.

The operation was carried out by officers of the SBU Main Office in Kyiv city and Kyiv region together with the National Police investigators, under the supervision of the Prosecutor General's Office.
