SBU exposes large-scale land pollution: Cherkasy region environment suffered damage amounting to UAH 24 million

In Cherkasy region, the Security Service of Ukraine exposed a local resident on large-scale pollution and land damage. The environment of the region suffered losses worth over UAH 24 million.

According to the pre-trial investigation, in 2020 a resident of Horodyshche signed a contract with businessmen for the supply of hazardous industrial waste for own needs. He purchased more than 500 tons of cardboard and paper waste for the manufacture of pallets. The offender stored toxic substances on the land plot without the appropriate permits.

The landfill was located on the territory of the former plant, and hazardous waste was stored in the open air. According to experts, the man's actions led to severe consequences of pollution and damage to land. Forensic environmental examination confirmed the amount of millions of damages caused to the state.

Within the criminal proceedings the offender was served suspicion notice of pollution or damage of lands.

The detection of illegal activities was carried out jointly with the National Police under the procedural guidance of the Smilyansk District Prosecutor's Office.
