Cherkasy region: SSU detains individual responsible for false bomb alerts coordinated from Russia

The SSU has identified a network of individuals responsible for a series of bomb threats in Cherkasy region. The offenders sent 9 bomb threats to various institutions and facilities through closed telegram chats controlled from Russia.

The investigation established that a first-year student of a local college carried out orders to send bomb alerts to various sites. In January, he used the Telegram channel to send such threats to schools, colleges, residential buildings, shopping and entertainment centers in Cherkasy region.

In addition, the ‘anonymous terrorist’ created his own Telegram channel to post photos and videos of the results of his activity and receive orders from other participants. It has been established that three ‘customers’ managed to implement their criminal intent. Through this channel, the offender received tasks related to bomb threats from his Russian supervisors and payment for fulfillment of instructions.

The law enforcement inspected premises and adjacent territories indicated in the messages. No explosives were found.

Professional investigative measures of the SSU led to identification of the perpetrator and his detention.

The individual confessed to making anonymous bomb alerts. As he explained, he wanted to increase the rating of his channel and make a profit by fulfilling customers’ orders.

During the search of the perpetrator’s home, the law enforcement seized computer equipment and a mobile phone with evidence of illegal activity, including correspondence and orders from Russian handlers.

To spread bomb alerts, the organizers involve citizens of Ukraine, whom the Russians promise anonymity and provide clear instructions. Often, the perpetrators do not fully realize all possible consequences of blocking various social facilities.

Criminal proceedings have been opened under Article 259.2 (knowingly false report about a threat to public safety, destruction or damage to property, committed repeatedly) of the CCU.

The SSU is verifying the suspect’s involvement in other similar crimes.

The SSU Office in Cherkasy region carried out the operation under the supervision of Cherkasy District Prosecutor’s Office.

The SSU reminds that ‘anonymous terrorists’ will be identified and prosecuted.
