SSU exposes head of Odesa customs lab on bribery

The SSU exposed the chief of Odesa directorate of the specialized laboratory of the State Customs Service on corruption.

The official set up a mechanism for systemic extortion of money from businessmen.

In exchange for bribes, the offender promised food importers not to create ‘obstacles’ during quality tests of foreign goods imported into Ukraine.

He also ‘guaranteed’ entrepreneurs ‘accelerated’ processing of relevant documents with positive experts’ conclusions.

The official charged USD 300 for each ‘fast-track’ examination.

Every day, dozens of representatives of companies transporting foreign products to Ukraine passed through Odesa customs lab.

The SSU documented numerous facts of the offender’s receiving illegal benefits.

The law enforcement detained the suspect at his workplace when he was receiving another bribe.

The detainee was served a notice of suspicion under the Article 368.4 of the CCU - acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official.

Court is to decide on a measure of restraint.

The offender is facing up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The investigation is underway to bring to justice other persons involved in the corruption scheme.

The SSU Odesa Office carried out the operation under the supervision of Odesa Region Prosecutor’s Office. The pre-trial investigation is conducted by the National Police.
