SBU exposes corrupt head of State Environmental Inspectorate in Sumy region

Officers of the Security Service of Ukraine detained the deputy head of the State environmental inspectorate in Sumy region while taking bribe.

According to the preliminary version of the investigation, the official demanded improper advantage from local manufacturers whose activities are related to hazardous employment. For remuneration, the official did not reflect in the inspection reports that the excess of permissible emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere was revealed and contributed to obtaining permits for harmful works. Such actions could lead to aggravation of the ecological situation in the region and harm the health of the local population.

The malefactor was detained in the center of Sumy under Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedural Code of Ukraine during taking bribe from the head of one of the city's construction companies.

Now the detainee has been served a notice of suspicion on acceptance of an offer, promise, or reception of improper advantage.

The investigation is ongoing. The involvement of other officials of the environmental inspectorate in the corruption scheme is being verified.
