SSU exposes gas theft and prevents industrial disaster

In Zhytomyr region, the SSU exposed an enterprise on unauthorized connection to a gas pipeline, which could have led to an industrial disaster.

According to findings, the offenders were stealing natural gas to heat an office building and warehouses of an enterprise. Interfering with gas pipes was disguised as landscaping works. The state losses are estimated at UAH 47 m (USD 1,800,832).

Moreover, the gas theft was a serious risk to public safety. The pressure drop in the pipeline, emergency cut-off of gas for the enterprise and households, as well possible damage to the lines, were a threat to critical infrastructure and a serious hazard.

In addition to safety risks, local domestic consumers had to pay for the heating of the enterprise as the theft ‘losses’ were included as gas transportation tariffs in the bills.

The SSU operation resulted in initiating a criminal proceeding under Part 2 Article 292 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (damage to main or industrial oil, gas, condensate pipelines). The investigation is underway to identify all those involved and estimate the volumes of gas stolen.

The SSU Office in Zhytomyr region carried out the operation jointly with the National Police under the supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.
