Kyiv region: SSU dismantles clandestine explosives workshop

The SSU is taking steps to prevent and neutralize terrorist threats related to illicit arms trafficking. In an operation in Kyiv region, the SSU uncovered a clandestine workshop manufacturing weapons.

The seized items include TNT-based explosive devices and firearms with silencers.

The SSU is verifying if the weapons were intended for use in terrorist attacks.

The investigation established that the illegal activity was organized by a local who had previously been convicted of manufacturing improvised explosive devices. This time, the individual set up a clandestine armory in his own house.

Preliminary findings indicate that the man planned to sell arms and explosives through personal connections in criminal environment.

The search of the suspect’s house resulted in the seizure of:

  • a large amount of TNT and other explosives;
  • components for IEDs;
  • grenades with fuses;
  • 10 firearms with silencers;
  • almost 2,000 rounds of assorted ammunition;
  • components for firearms;
  • machinery and specialized laboratory equipment.

The seized items were sent for forensic examination.

Criminal proceeding was opened under Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigators are preparing notification of suspicion. The court is to decide on the measure of restraint.

The pre-trial investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances of illegal activity and bring the involved to justice.
