SBU exposes theft and sale of spare parts for Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives
The Security Service of Ukraine exposed and stopped theft of elements of the brake system of Ukrzaliznytsia rolling stock. The lack of such spare parts could lead to failures in rail transportation.
The SBU established that the scam was organized by officials of one of the regional branches of Ukrzaliznytsia. They removed spare parts from rolling stock on the territory of the locomotive depot and sold them to commercial entities.
Law enforcement officers detained one of the employees of the branch during another attempt to steal spare parts. During the pre-trial investigation, SBU officers documented that the exposed official put pressure on witnesses. Doing so, he hoped to conceal the involvement of the regional branch management in the scheme.
The stolen parts are currently seized by the court.
The issue of serving the official a suspicion notice of preclusion of appearance of a witness, victim or expert, or compulsion to testify or give an opinion is being settled.
The investigative is ongoing to identify and prosecute all persons involved in illegal activities.
The scheme was exposed by the SBU Office in Kharkiv region under the coordination of the SBU Main Directorate for Counterintelligence Protection of the State's Interests in the Sphere jointly with the Kharkiv Region National Police under the supervision of Kharkiv Region Prosecutor's Office.
