SSU exposes russian agent who tried to join Azov regiment

The SSU has prevented an enemy agent from infiltrating the Defence Forces of Ukraine: a russian agent, who tried to join the combat special unit of the Azov regiment, was detained in Kyiv.

The detained individual is a resident of Donetsk region, who in 2015 joined the groups of the terrorist organization DNR. There, he served in the russian-controlled ‘1st and 2nd army corps’, in particular, in the special purpose unit of the ‘DNR republican guard’.

Until 2018, he actively participated in military actions against Ukrainian troops in the east of our country.

Later, he left militia leaders and went to russia, where was recruited by russian special services to carry out reconnaissance and sabotage activities.

To fulfil their assignment, the spy was came from russia to Ukraine before the start the full-scale invasion.

If he had infiltrated the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he would be able to pass intelligence on location and movement of our troops, number of personnel and military equipment to his russian supervisors.

However, the SSU promptly exposed and detained the agent when he tried to pass selection to Azov.

The detainee has been notified of suspicion under Article 258-3.1 of the CCU (participation in a terrorist group or terrorist organization). Court has ruled to keep him in custody.

A pre-trial investigation is underway.

The SSU Military Counterintelligence and the SSU Main Investigative Directorate have exposed the agent with the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
