SSU detains freelancer who created anti-Ukrainian fakes for pro-russian Telegram channels
In Mykolaiv, the SSU uncovered an agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (‘the GRU’), who spread provocative material on the Internet in favour of the aggressor state.
On the occupiers’ instructions, the woman personally wrote fake posts praising the kremlin’s aggressive policy and discrediting the command of Ukraine’s Defence Forces.
In such publications, the enemy accomplice glorified the invaders and disinformed readers about the developments on the front and the socio-political situation in Ukraine.
She agreed the prepared articles remotely with her GRU handler and then spun them using a network of specially created Telegram channels.
Their total audience was over 50,000 users, who received a new portion of fakes from the enemy propagandist almost every day.
In this way, the aggressor was trying to undermine the internal political situation in Ukraine’s frontline region.
The SSU documented the suspect’s criminal activity and detained her in her apartment.
According to the investigation, the supporter of ruscism is a 42-year-old local freelancer who had been preparing paid-for posts for pro-russian political forces before the full-scale invasion.
This brought her to the attention of the russian intelligence services, which remotely recruited the woman in the summer of 2023.
The agent was given a list of topical issues from the GRU, which she had to ‘highlight’ in the context of praising ruscists and discrediting Ukrainian defenders.
To conceal her criminal actions, she often changed her nickname and profile picture, and used a proxy server to anonymize herself.
The russians paid the asset for each publication, transferring money to her bank card.
During the search of her home, the SSU seized a mobile phone and a laptop with media files used by the suspect in information and subversive activities against Ukraine.
Based on the evidence, SSU investigators notified the perpetrator of suspicion under Article 110.1, 110.2 of the CCU (encroachment on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and inviolability).
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Mykolaiv region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
