SSU exposes high-ranking official of Mykolaivoblenergo on extortion of money from businesses

The SSU is counteracting to systemic threats to strategically important entities of Ukraine. In an operation, the SSU exposed one of heads of Mykolaivoblenergo JSC on extortion of bribes from businessmen.

According to the investigation, the high-ranking official set up a scheme to illicitly obtain money for services related to electricity supply.

The SSU documented the fact of extorting a bribe from a local entrepreneur. For the money, the official ‘guaranteed’ unimpeded approval of project documents to connect the commercial facility to the United Electrical Grid. He engaged a representative of an affiliated firm in illegal activity.

The law enforcement exposed the offenders after hand-over of the full sum of the bribe.

As the result of searches at the perpetrator’s office and home, the investigators seized over USD 100,000, which are apparently proceeds of crime.

The investigation into bribery is ongoing. The official will be notified of suspicion. The court is to decide on the measure of restraint.

The SSU Office in Mykolaiv region carried out the operation together with the National Police investigators under the supervision of Mykolaiv District Prosecutor’s Office and with the assistance of the management of Mykolaivoblenergo.


According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of a crime and cannot be subject to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in line with the procedure defined by law and established by court’s verdict.
