SBU seizes smuggling goods worth USD 7,200,000 and initiates 47 investigations on customs corruption
Since the beginning of 2020, the SBU seized smuggling goods and found violations of customs regulations amounting to UAH 204 million (USD 7,200,000). Within the framework of initiated 38 pre-trial investigations, the offenders received notices of suspicion of smuggling.
Contraband includes weapons, illicit substances, cultural property, timber, and so on.
Recently, the SBU detained the organizer of the illegal firearms sale.
The offenders ordered component parts on specialized websites from North America. Component parts were delivered to Ukraine under the guise of sports equipment. Then, weapons were produced and sold at Ukrainian online auctions.
The SBU also blocked the smuggling of amber (total weight 113.5 kilos) to Lithuania.
In addition to seizures and initiation of criminal proceedings, the mechanisms of fines and additional charges of customs duties are also applied.
In particular, during this period, due to the SBU materials, almost 32 million fines were imposed. The sum of customs duties paid by offenders is UAH 91,600,000 (USD 3,200,000).
The SBU initiated 47 pre-trial investigations on corruption at customs. 53 people received notices of suspicion.
For example, the SBU exposed illegal schemes with customs clearance of vehicles at Poliskyi, Halytskyi and Bukovynskyi customs offices.
The employees of the Chornomorsk and Odesa customs extorted money from a businessman for unimpeded customs control.
Also, the acting head of Zhytomyr customs received a notice of suspicion of embezzlement.
Since the beginning of 2020, 9 officials of the State Border Guard Service, customs and other authorized bodies were sentenced.
