SBU blocks smuggling of cigarettes by helicopter

In Volyn region, the SBU stopped the activities of an interregional criminal group. Every day, the offenders smuggled cigarettes worth up to USD 30,000.

SBU operatives and investigators found out that the organizers had purchased a Robinson R-44 helicopter in the east of Ukraine. In April 2021, they equipped the helicopter for smuggling. The aircraft was crossing the border at low altitude to avoid detection by border guards. The offenders were hiding the helicopter in disguised hangars.

SBU operatives detained the suspects in Kovel district during another attempt to smuggle 15,200 packs of Ukrainian cigarettes. The SBU also seized the helicopter and a minibus worth almost USD 85,000.

Within the criminal proceedings, the SBU is going to serve the offenders suspicion notices of violation of international flights regulations.

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Volyn Region Prosecutor's Office.
