SBU prevents smuggling of ancient coins worth over USD 36,000

In Khmelnytskyi region, the SBU prevented smuggling of cultural property to the EU.
The total value of the seized antiques tops UAH 1 m (USD 35,714).

Allegedly, a local collector organized illegal business. He sold coins of the 15-17th centuries abroad via international online auctions.

The smuggler used international postal services to transport cultural property to foreign customers. To conceal the offense, he indicated in the parcels fictitious personal data.

The SBU documented several facts of illegal activity.

During searches of the smuggler's residence, law enforcement officers found almost 2,500 more rare coins, which he planned to sell to foreign customers.

The issue of serving the offender a suspicion notice of smuggling is being resolved within the initiated criminal proceeding.

Investigative actions are ongoing under the supervision of the Khmelnytskyi Region Prosecutor's Office.

We recall that on March 1, 2020, the SBU exposed an organized group that smuggled cultural property to the EU. During the searches, law enforcement confiscated a collection of antiques worth almost USD 1 m that was to be smuggled.
