SSU detains FSB agent looking for weaknesses in Ukraine’s northern defenses

The SSU Counterintelligence thwarted the enemy’s attempt to obtain coordinates of Ukraine’s Defence Forces in the border area of Chernihiv region.

As a result of a special operation, the SSU detained an FSB agent who was gathering intelligence on fortifications and checkpoints ensuring the defence of Ukraine’s northern borders.

He was also trying to identify the locations of Ukrainian air defence systems.

The agent rode his bicycle in the target area and covertly photographed locations of the Defence Forces.

He was supposed to send the collected data to the occupiers as georeferenced media files via a messenger app.

The SSU worked proactively: the officers detained the enemy asset and prevented the data from being passed to the aggressor.

According to the investigation, the suspect is a local utility worker who was recruited remotely by an officer of the FSB border guard directorate in Bryansk region. The latter has been identified by the SSU.

The traitor came to the enemy’s attention in late 2023 through his anti-Ukrainian posts in pro-kremlin Telegram channels.

During the search of the suspect’s home, the SSU seized mobile phones, computer equipment and other evidence.

The SSU notified the perpetrator of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Chernihiv Office under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
