SSU detains FSB agent who adjusted missile strikes on Kyiv on eve of 2023
The SSU has detained an agent recruited by the FSB in russia and sent to Ukraine to carry out reconnaissance and sabotage.
On 31 December 2022, the aggressor used coordinates provided by him to launch a missile attack on the buildings of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
The spy also reconnoitred locations of staffs and sites with large concentrations of the AFU’s personnel and military equipment in Kyiv and Zhytomyr oblast.
As a result of the operation, the SSU identified the enemy asset, established his location and apprehended him in his apartment in Kyiv.
According to the investigation, the traitor is a 40-year-old Kyiv resident with pro-kremlin views. To assist the aggressor in the war against Ukraine, he obtained a ‘volunteer’ status late last year and travelled to russia through third states.
While crossing the border with russia, the man, on his own initiative, told an FSB officer he was ready to cooperate with the russian special service.
He at once gave the russian interlocutors coordinates in Kyiv oblast where one of the units of the Defence Forces was supposedly deployed.
A few days later, the invaders carried out an air attack on this ‘location’.
After that, the FSB brought their agent to moscow and briefed him. The traitor was then sent to Ukraine to gather intelligence.
In return, he was promised help in obtaining russian citizenship and timely extraction to the aggressor state.
To collect information in Zhytomyr region, the agent used his relatives living there. He elicited the ‘necessary’ information during everyday conversations, and they unwittingly revealed certain data.
In the capital, he carried out visual surveillance and photographed Ukrainian targets during walks.
The following items were seized from the suspect as a result of the searches:
- russian symbols;
- personal documents notarized in russia, necessary for obtaining citizenship of the aggressor state;
- a mobile phone with his texting with the FSB handler.
Based on the evidence, SSU investigators served the detained enemy accomplice a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody, facing life imprisonment.
The SSU Office in Zhytomyr region conducted the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
