SSU detains russian agent who looked for ‘weak points’ on Ukrainian-russian border

As a result of counter-sabotage operations in Sumy oblast, the SSU exposed another FSB agent.

The offender is a local resident, whom the russian special service engaged in covert cooperation before the full-scale invasion.

According to the SSU Counterintelligence, the man was recruited during one of his trips to russia, where he was in contact with a russian working for the FSB.

After February 24, 2022, the agent received an assignment: to collect intelligence on locations and bases of the Defence Forces in the border areas of the northeastern part of Ukraine.

The enemy was primarily interested in fortifications and weapons of Ukrainian defenders in Sumy region.

To gather information, the enemy agent drove his car around Sumy region.

During such trips, he met locals, talked to them and tried to elicit information on presence of Ukrainian troops in the border area.

The traitor would go to the area, try and confirm the intelligence and mark coordinates of targets on an electronic map to be passed on to the FSB.

To communicate with the aggressor, he used a secure chat in a messenger app.

The SSU Counterintelligence detained the suspect when he was conducting reconnaissance.

As a result of searches, the SSU seized mobile phones and computer equipment with evidence of sabotage activities against Ukraine.

SSU investigators served the detained agent a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law).

The court chose custody as a measure of restraint. The investigation is ongoing.

The SSU Office in Sumy region carried out the operation jointly with the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine under the procedural supervision of Sumy Region Prosecutor’s Office.
