SSU detains GRU agent preparing capture of Krasnohorivka in Donetsk region
The SSU has detained a russian military intelligence agent who was spying on the locations of Ukrainian troops defending Krasnohorivka.
The enemy was interested in the coordinates of combat positions of artillery and UAV units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which are deterring the occupiers’ assault groups.
The aggressor needed the intelligence to prepare military operations aimed at capturing the town and further advancing on Kurakhove direction.
To identify the locations of the Defence Forces, the GRU engaged its agent, a local handyman.
Under the guise of performing various jobs, he walked around the community and secretly recorded locations of Ukrainian defenders.
After the reconnaissance sorties, the asset returned home to report to his handler in an anonymous chat in a messenger.
The SSU timely uncovered the enemy plans, detained the informant and took action to protect Ukrainian troops.
According to the investigation, the man was in direct contact with a serving officer of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (‘the GRU’), whom the SSU has identified.
The enemy service recruited the man remotely because of his pro-kremlin views, which he expressed among his friends.
Based on the evidence, SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
