SSU exposes GRU agent on trying to become postgraduate student to collect intelligence on Kyiv region’s defence

As a result of a special operation in Kyiv, the SSU Counterintelligence detained another agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (better known as ‘the GRU’).

The spy is a native of Donetsk region with a degree in technology, recruited remotely by the russian intelligence service in November 2022.

Since then, he has been covertly collecting information on deployment and movement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Sloviansk.

The enemy agent was particularly interested in the routes of the AFU’s military equipment convoys heading to Bakhmut.

The traitor walked around Sloviansk and filmed consequences of russia’s air strikes on civilian infrastructure using his phone camera.

Occupiers needed photos and videos of the damaged buildings and their coordinates to prepare new and adjust repeated strikes on Ukrainian targets.

Later, the GRU agent moved to the capital, where decided to enter a postgraduate programme at one of Kyiv’s higher education institutions.

In this way, the man was trying to gain a foothold in Kyiv and planned to continue his reconnaissance and sabotage activities for the aggressor.

However, the SSU became aware of the traitor’s plans. The Service documented his criminal actions and detained him in the dormitory, where he had received a room for the duration of the admission campaign.

During the search, investigators found the agent’s mobile phone and laptop, which were used to communicate with the enemy intelligence service.

Based on the collected evidence, the SSU served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU - high treason committed under martial law.

The suspect is in custody, has pleaded guilty in full and is now facing life imprisonment. The investigation is underway.

The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
