SSU detains GRU agent who spied on military airfields and prepared terrorist attacks in western Ukraine
In Khmelnytskyi region, the Security Service of Ukraine has apprehended another agent of russian military intelligence (‘the GRU’). He was spying on the airfields of the Defense Forces and preparing terrorist attacks near a Territorial Recruitment Center in western Ukraine.
According to the SSU Military Counterintelligence, the perpetrator is a 30-year-old local unemployed man. The enemy recruited him through Telegram channels, where he was looking for ‘easy money’.
The occupiers instructed their asset to organize an online broadcast of combat activity at one of the military airfields in the region.
To do this, the traitor equipped an ‘observation post’ right in his own house, which is located near the Armed Forces of Ukraine installation.
It was documented how the individual set up a video camera with a remote access function for the GRU on the roof of the house.
The agent’s next task was to blow up an improvised explosive device near the local Territorial Recruitment Center.
To carry out the attack, he received detailed instructions from his russian handler, including on how to make the bomb and attach a mobile phone to it.
The enemy special service ordered their agent to install a tracking program on this phone to monitor its movement to the potential target.
In this way, the GRU planned to remotely detonate the IED together with the agent to eliminate him as an ‘unnecessary witness’.
The SSU Military Counterintelligence identified the traitor at an early stage and detained him, preventing the crime. After that, action was taken to protect the locations of the Defense Forces.
Mobile phones used by the enemy accomplice to gather intelligence and communicate with the GRU were seized during searches. The SSU also found the phone that he was supposed to install on the IED.
SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
- 114-2.3 (unauthorized dissemination of information on the movement or location of the AFU, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody without bail and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of Khmelnytskyi Region Prosecutor’s Office.
