SSU detains GRU agent preparing missile attack on military hospitals and railway in Cherkasy region
The SSU has uncovered a russian military intelligence agent who was preparing enemy air attacks on Cherkasy oblast.
His main task was to identify railway junction stations used for the transfer of Ukrainian military equipment to the frontline.
The GRU hoped to obtain from him coordinates of depots with weapons and ammunition for Ukrainian troops.
The aggressor was interested in locations of military hospitals where wounded Ukrainian defenders are treated.
The occupiers were going to use this information to plan missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian targets.
In this way, they hoped to cut off the supply of weapons and ammunition to the frontline and hit the areas with high concentrations of Ukrainian troops.
However, the SSU worked proactively – the agent was identified, his criminal actions – documented, he was detained at his home.
Due to the SSU’s prompt response, the Defence Forces command was timely warned to ensure the safety of Ukrainian units.
According to the investigation, the traitor is a 45-year-old native of Luhansk region who moved to Cherkasy oblast in April 2022 as an IDP.
Earlier this year, he was recruited remotely by an officer of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (known as the GRU).
The russian military intelligence recruited the man through his acquaintance, a militant of the russian occupation unit stationed in the temporarily occupied part of Luhansk region.
Anonymous chats in a messenger app were used for communication. The asset transmitted the data as photos of Ukrainian targets with descriptions, geolocations and georeferencing.
His handlers transferred money for each completed assignment to the agent’s bank account.
During the searches of the suspect’s apartment, the SSU seized a mobile phone with evidence of his communication with the GRU and a bank card to which he was paid.
SSU investigators have served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.
The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Cherkasy region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
