SSU detains GRU agent who collected intelligence on Zaporizhzhia defence plants
The SSU Counterintelligence has detained another agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (‘the GRU’), who operated in Zaporizhzhia.
The perpetrator was trying to identify geolocations of local defence industry enterprises and pass them on to the aggressor.
His primary ‘targets’ were plants producing ammunition for heavy armoured vehicles and rocket and artillery weapons of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The agent also monitored sites with large concentrations of military personnel and equipment of the Defence Forces in Zaporizhzhia.
To do this, he used public transport to travel around the city and covertly recorded infrastructure facilities that he believed could be used to base Ukrainian troops or produce munitions.
The SSU documented the suspect’s reconnaissance and sabotage activities and detained him at his apartment.
During the search, investigators seized a mobile phone used by the perpetrator to take photos and videos of Ukrainian targets and communicate with the GRU.
According to the investigation, the traitor is a former deputy head of a unit in the former regional office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who left the service in 2014.
After russia’s full-scale invasion, he was recruited by a career military officer of the russian MoD. The two had studied together at a higher educational establishment in the soviet times.
In the autumn of 2023, the enemy asset began to carry out the GRU’s assignments.
For communication, the spy used an anonymous chat in a popular messenger app and transmitted the information using code words.
Based on the evidence, the SSU notified the detainee of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.
The operation was conducted by the SSU Office in Zaporizhzhia region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
