SSU detains gru spy who ‘guided’ russian missiles at energy facilities in Vinnytsia region

During a multi-stage special operation in Vinnytsia region, the SSU Counterintelligence exposed an activated sleeper agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (the gru).

The spy was covertly collecting intelligence on locations and movements of Ukrainian Defence Forces in the region.

The individual passed to the aggressor coordinates of strategic critical infrastructure and life support facilities.

It was on his ‘tip’ that the occupiers planned to carry out a series of targeted missile strikes on energy generating enterprises in the area.

The SSU established the agent’s location and detained him, thus preventing an attempt to transmit coordinates of a Ukrainian energy facility to the enemy.

The detainee is a former soviet serviceman, who retired from the army in early 90s. After retiring, the man lived in Vinnytsia region.

According to intelligence, at that time he had been already recruited by the russian military intelligence, who after the ussr’s collapse put him on standby.

After the full-scale invasion began, he was contacted by an officer of the gru and asked for ‘help’ in conducting reconnaissance and sabotage activities against Ukraine.

The traitor agreed to the ‘offer’, after which he was given assignments.

To execute them, the agent carried out covert surveillance of Ukrainian targets and photo and video recording. The collected data was passed to russia through a pre-arranged Telegram channel as marks on electronic maps and media files.

During the search at the suspect’s home, the SSU found a mobile phone with evidence of his communication with the russian handler.

SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason committed under martial law).

Court chose custody as a measure of restraint for the suspect.

The SSU Office in Vinnytsia Region carried out the operation under the procedural supervision of the regional prosecutor’s office.
