SSU detains agent of russian military intelligence who helped enemy prepare strikes on Zhytomyr region and planned to join occupiers’ ‘firing squads’ (video)
As a result of a multi-stage special operation in Zhytomyr region, the SSU detained an agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the russian armed forces (aka GRU).
The agent passed data to his russian supervisor in the form of geo-referenced maps with the locations of Ukrainian military facilities and a defence enterprise in the area.
The aggressors planned to use the received information to carry out massive missile attacks on strategic infrastructure.
In case the region is occupied, the enemy agent planned to join the so-called ‘firing squads’ to torture and kill locals.
The investigation established that the traitor is a resident of Korosten, who previously worked at one of the strategic plants. Russian special services noticed him because of his pro-russian position on social networks banned in Ukraine.
The GRU handler gave the traitor a detailed briefing on collection of intelligence and secure channels to transmit it.
During the searches of the suspect’s home, the SSU seized communication devices that he used to contact his supervisor.
SSU investigators have notified the detained agent of suspicion of treason committed under martial law. The court has decided to keep the suspect in custody.
The traitor is facing 15 years in prison or life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The SSU Office in Zhytomyr Region carried out the operation under coordination of the SSU Counterintelligence Department and procedural supervision of Zhytomyr Region Prosecutor’s Office.
