SSU detains enemy agent preparing terrorist attack in downtown Kyiv
The SSU Counterintelligence and investigators have averted a large-scale terrorist attack on one of the central crowded streets of Kyiv.
As a result of the special operation, an enemy agent was detained in the capital: she was preparing to detonate explosives near the building of one of the SSU units.
This location is not currently used by the SSU officers, who have been relocated to backup sites. However, a potential terrorist attack could have resulted in multiple casualties among civilians in the central part of Kyiv.
At the scene of the incident, the SSU found a bag containing an improvised explosive device with a 7 kg of TNT capacity.
Such a charge is enough to seriously damage the building and cause fatal injuries to people around the epicenter of the explosion.
To prepare the attack, russia remotely recruited a 22-year-old drug addict from Lviv who was looking for quick money on Telegram.
On the occupiers’ orders, the girl came to Kyiv, where her russian handler rented an apartment in the city centre.
After settling into the temporary accommodation, she picked up a mini-surveillance camera via courier delivery and installed it on the balcony.
Using the remote access, the adversary was able to monitor the central street of Kyiv online and intended to record the consequences of the terrorist attack.
The SSU was proactive and apprehended the perpetrator ‘red-handed’ when she took a bag of explosives from the hiding place and was heading to the rented flat.
During the search, a mobile phone used by the agent to communicate with the russian intelligence was also seized.
SSU investigators have served the detainee a notice of suspicion under the Articles of the CCU:
- 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
- 14.1, 258.2 (preparation to commit a terrorist act, committed by a group, upon prior conspiracy);
- 263.1 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives).
The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Efforts are underway to bring to justice all persons involved in the planning and preparation of the terrorist attack.
The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
