SSU detains Odesa customs official who set up system of kickbacks for import of undeclared cash into Ukraine

The SSU is systemically fighting against corruption, which threatens Ukraine’s state security amidst the ongoing war.

As a result of operational and investigative activities at Odesa Customs, the SSU shut down a criminal scheme of receiving money for importing undeclared cash into our country.

A senior state inspector of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi customs post is involved in its organization.

He demanded kickbacks of up to 3% of the total amount of currency imported without declaring.

According to the investigation, there was an attempt to transport several million in hryvnia equivalent across the border with the official’s assistance.

In exchange for a bribe, the inspector promised the dealers unimpeded currency ‘traffic’ without questioning the origin of the cash.

The SSU detained the offender when he received the bribe for turning a blind eye to a batch of undeclared money.

The official was served a notice of suspicion under Article 368.3 of the CCU (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an unlawful benefit by an official).

The court chose custody as a measure of restraint for the suspect. The investigation is underway.

This is the fourth corruption scheme that the SSU has eliminated at Odesa Customs since the beginning of 2023.

The SSU Office in Odesa region carried out the operation jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor’s Office.
