SSU detains member of Opposition Platform – For Life party who worked for russian intelligence in eastern Ukraine

As a result of counter-sabotage efforts in the frontline areas of Donetsk region, the SSU Counterintelligence exposed an agent of the main directorate of the general staff of the russian armed forces (the GRU).

The offender is a member of Siversk Town Council from the Opposition Platform - For Life political party, which is banned in Ukraine.

Since October last year, this individual had been collecting intelligence on deployment of Ukrainian Defence Forces in Bakhmut district.

The traitor also provided the enemy with coordinates of local critical infrastructure facilities, including energy generating enterprises.

The aggressor needed the intelligence to launch targeted missile strikes on Ukrainian towns.

After the shelling, the agent went to the target area to record the consequences and prepare a ‘report’ in order to adjust the next attack.

The SSU detained the suspect on his attempt to pass classified information to russians.

According to the investigation, the local council member was recruited by the GRU during ‘communication’ in a chat of a pro-kremlin Telegram channel.

Anonymous messaging apps were used for communication.

Based on the evidence collected, SSU investigators served the detainee a notice of suspicion.

Court chose custody as a measure of restraint for the suspect.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Counterintelligence Department jointly with the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
