SSU detains spotter recruited by FSB through online dating sites

The SSU Counterintelligence has apprehended an enemy informant who was operating in Donetsk region and Sumy. The perpetrator was reconnoitering the locations of the Defense Forces and adjusting russia’s air attacks.

Most of all, the aggressor was interested in coordinates of Ukrainian troops in one of the hottest frontline areas – Pokrovsk sector.

According to the investigation, the traitor is a 23-year-old resident of Pokrovsk. The FSB recruited him through a so-called ‘honey trap’: when the young man was looking for a girl on dating sites.

An employee of the russian service contacted him there and offered to get to know him better.

Later, she instructed the man to walk around the area near Pokrovsk, where he secretly recorded positions of Ukraine’s Defense Forces. He also reported to the occupiers on the consequences of enemy air strikes on the town.

After reconnaissance sorties near the eastern front, the FSB sent its asset to Sumy region to track the work of Ukrainian air defense on the border with russia.

To carry out this task, the agent rented an apartment in Sumy and set up an observation post in it.

On the windowsill, the spy installed a mobile phone with additional power supplies, which provided the FSB with an online broadcast of their air attacks.

The SSU detained the suspect and seized the phones he was using in reconnaissance and sabotage activities against Ukraine.

SSU investigators served him a notice of suspicion under Article 114-2.3 of the CCU (unauthorized dissemination of information on movement or location of the AFU or other lawful military formations, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces up to 12 years in prison.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Donetsk and Luhansk regions under the procedural supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
