SSU detains mole who tried to join police to spy on ‘Offensive Guard’ and AFU units

The SSU’s cyber units have thwarted an attempt of the FSB to infiltrate its agent into Ukraine’s Defence Forces.

As a result of a special operation in Kyiv region, the SSU detained a traitor who, on the enemy instructions, tried to join the National Police.

In case of successful enrolment, he was supposed to collect information on the law enforcement units – those of the Offensive Guard initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The agent hoped to be able to collect data on the military personnel and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as well.

The ruscists needed the intelligence to prepare air attacks on the Defence Forces and to plan combat operations on the front line.

To check if the agent was able to operate as a ‘mole’, the FSB gave him a test assignment.

He was instructed to reconnoiter the locations of military airfields, hospitals and defence plants in Kyiv region.

The asset was also to collect as much information as possible for the FSB on one of the AFU’s mechanized brigades.

To do this, the traitor used a local woman from whom he rented an apartment. Her son fought in this brigade and was killed on the front line.

The SSU documented the suspect’s actions and detained him in the apartment. By that time, he had already applied to join the National Police.

According to the investigation, the perpetrator is a resident of Brovary district, recruited remotely by an FSB officer in late 2023. The latter has already been identified.

The man’s pro-kremlin comments in the chats of russian Telegram channels brought him to the attention of the aggressor.

To carry out his handlers’ instructions, he drove in the ‘necessary’ area, recorded coordinates of targets and then passed the geolocations to the russians.

The FSB paid their asset to his bank card.

During the search, the SSU seized a mobile phone with evidence of communication with the russian service.

SSU investigators have now served the detainee a notice of suspicion under Article 111.2 of the CCU (high treason, committed under martial law).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment.

The operation was carried out under the procedural supervision of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
