Zakarpattia region: SSU detains ‘force wing’ boss of criminal group run by former ‘party of regions’ member
The SSU and the National Police have neutralized an organized criminal group that was terrorizing and intimidating residents of Zakarpattia region.
As a result of the operation, the head of the ‘enforcers’ of a gang run by a former parliament member from the party of regions was detained in Mukachevo.
The ex-MP currently heads one of the region’s district councils.
According to the investigation, the criminals specialized in violence and pressure against political rivals of the former parliamentarian.
In one of the episodes, they tried to intimidate a member of Zakarpattia Region Council.
As was documented, the perpetrators blew up explosives in the victim’s backyard. Prior to that, they had several times set fire to his house and movable property.
Based on the evidence collected, the detainee was served a notice of suspicion under Article 27.3, 27.4, 194.2 of the CCU (intentional destruction or damage to property).
The court is to decide on a measure of restraint.
The suspect faces up to 10 years in prison.
The investigation is underway.
The operation was conducted jointly with the National Police under the procedural supervision of Zakarpattia Region Prosecutor’s Office.
According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of a crime and may not be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in line with the procedure defined by law and established by the court’s verdict.
