SSU detains organizer of 2014 ‘referendum’ in Donetsk region

The SSU is acting comprehensively to bring to justice all those involved in subversive activities against the state security of Ukraine. In Donetsk region,
the SSU detained one of the organizers of the local 2014 pseudo-referendum.

The individual called on citizens to remove state flags and vote for the region’s accession to the so-called ‘DNR’. He also incited people to mass riots under the guise of holding rallies and public gatherings.

The investigation established that a head of a local commercial entity and his accomplices were behind this illegal activity. Their provocative actions on the territory of Velykonovosilkivskyi district were documented.

Subsequently, the man left government-controlled territory of Donetsk region and for a long time was hiding from justice in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

In 2017, the investigators notified him, in absentia, of suspicion of trespass against territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine. The fugitive was declared wanted.

In the course of investigation, the SSU received intelligence that the suspect returned to the government-controlled territory to attend to his personal matters. The fugitive was located and detained.

The pre-trial investigation is underway to establish all the circumstances of the crime and prosecute all those involved.

The SSU Main Directorate in Donetsk and Luhansk regions carried out the operation under the supervision of Donetsk Region Prosecutor’s Office.
